A special executive session was held at the State Capitol of Hawaii, to welcome the delegation from Laiwu China and discuss how the cooperation could take place, between China and Hawaii, for mutual benefit. Agricultural business was the key theme, and the discussion ranged widely over economic, cultural and technical topics.
Host for the meeting was one of the most senior elected representatives in the State of of Hawaii, Speaker Emeritus Calivin Say. Speaker Say, a member of the large Chinese community in Honolulu, has long been an advocate of closer ties.
He brought together tow of the most vital leaders in agriculture policy in Hawaii, State Senator Mike Gabbard, who chairs the Agriculture and Environment Committee, and Scott Enright, a member of the Governor’s cabinet and Chair of the Department of Agriculture. Providing critical staff support, with updated techincal and policy information, was Liz Xu, a key executive at the Department of Agriculture.
Attending the meeting from China were CEO of Wanshing Corporation, Liu Jianzeng; Cui Xueming, representing the City of Laiwu, Shandong Province; and Li Yanjun, of the Beijing International Trade Center, connected with the Ministry of Commerce of China.
The session was organized by Asia-Pacific Group (with offices in Honolulu and Beijing), with founders Xiaofang Zhou North and Michael North present and facilitating the discussions.
After the meeting in the Capitol, the group visited the historic and popular figure of Queen Lili’uokalani of the Kingdom of Hawai’i, and the ‘Iolani Palace, where she lived and worked.
